The love affair of Laila Majnu has been converted into a celluloid version once again by the creative team of Imtiaz Ali and his brother Sajid and produced by Ekta Kapoor and we must say that the whole team, unfortunately, ended up making nothing but a ‘Mahaepisode’ (Lengthy Episode) of the classic folktale.
Qais (Avinash Tiwary), who is from a well-to-do business family, falls head over heels with Laila ( Tripti Dimri) who loves to flirt around with boys, but she finds Qais as her dream boy after a few naughty sequences. On the contrary, Qais and Laila’s fathers are the all-time foes and leave no stone unturned to get the lovebirds to fall apart when the families come to know about the romance. The separation from her love interest turns our hero turn insane. Does the love story reach to a fair end or some twist is hooked with the climax, is what the crux of the tale.
Story, Screenplay, and Dialogues
The plot of the film is inherited from the folktale and placed into the modern backdrop. However, the story becomes too predictable when you come to know that the families are against the lovebirds. Even the screenplay is also very flat; therefore, fails to aid the story. A few dialogues are really interesting, especially when Qais and Laila and lates between Qais and his father.
Sajid Ali’s take on this classical affair could have been better if the script had left some unseen moments for the audience. Even the editing could have been a little crisp to save the time of the viewers. Besides, the valleys of Kashmir have been shot well and you actually wish to enter the phenomenon depicted on the screen.
Avinash Tiwary as Qais looks promising whether in the scenes of romance or portraying Majnu’s plight. Tripti Dimri as Laila definitely leaves her mark and of course, looks pretty. The performances of Sumeet Kaul, Parmeet Seth, and Benjamin Gilani lend suitable support to the lead cast.
